Joshua was accidentally killed by his three year old son. He had just gotten home from his shift and laid his gun on the kitchen table. His son got a hold of the gun and shot Joshua in the back. Joshua had just recently graduated from the Metro Police Academy.

Lance Cpl. Dana Lyle Tate

Age 44
Dana was killed with Dana while answering a domestic abuse call. They were killed upon entering the house. Deputies Tate and Coursen were dispatched at 4:09, and each arrived at the home within 10 minutes. At 4:28, Tate called back to dispatch to say everything was OK. But at about 4:40, the dispatch office received two or three calls that shots had been fired. Arrest of husband and wife were made.

Age 35

Deputy Robert Tanner Jr.

Age 39
Robert was shot in the head while in the process of a routine traffic stop. The suspect had a history of problems. While waiting to hear from dispatch regarding license plate check Robert was killed. He was found by passer bys on the ground next to the drivers side of his cruiser. Suspect caught. Tanner was with the Muskingum S.O. for eight years. Robert leaves behind his wife.



Dennis La Page
Charleston, South Carolina
January 19, 2002
Age 36
Dennis was shot three tines - once in the head, once in the back and once in the elbow. Dennis had been working off duty as a security officer for a private dorm when he stepped outside to see two officers chasing a suspect. The suspect had just been in a vehicle accident and shot two nurses while running from scene. Dennis was wearing his uniform along with a bulletproof vest and his gun.

Sgt. Mark F. Parry

Age 42
Mark died 25 days after a drunk driver hit his patrol car. He was a 16 year veteran of the Baltimore PD. He had been filling in for another supervisor. Mark leaves behind his wife and three children ages 10 - 14. He also had a brother who is a Baltimore PO and a sister who works in the counties 911 center.



Jack Cooper
Little Rock, Arkansas
February 1, 2002
Age 34
Jack was answering a call to an apartment complex. A man called in saying his family was killed by vampires. During the struggle to arrest the suspect, he got ahold of Jacks 40 cal Glock and shot him in the head, Jack was on life support but his family made the decision to take him off it. He died 20 mins later. He leaves behind his mother and father.



Dennis McNamara
Upper Darby Township, Philadelphia
February 6, 2002
Age 43
Dennis was shot to death by a Pagan gang member who vowed to take out a police officer before going back to jail. Dennis noticed a suspicious vehicle sitting outside of the home of the known suspect and when stopping to talk to the vehicle owner the suspect came out of his home and shot Dennis one time in the temple. Dennis was one of the most decorated officers of Upper Darby Township. Suspect caught after being chased, rolled his car, currently hospitalized.



Trooper Lawrence Gleason
New York, New York

Age 28
Lawrence was shot and killed with a 30/30 shot gun. He was at the home of a woman whom had been trying to keep distance from her ex- boy friend. Lawrence was finishing up paper work when the boy friend came back with the shot gun and firing into the house. He was shot one inch below his body armor. The boy friend then killed his girl friend and himself.



Michael Scanlon
Detroit, Michigan

Age 34
Michael was killed in a gun battle with a man who, while wounded himself, grabbed Michael's gun and shot him with it. The suspect them took Michaels patrol car and drove himself to the hospital. Michael was a 7 year veteran of the force.



State Trooper Brian K. Nichols
Alabama
January 14, 1967
February 17, 2002
Age 35
Brian was en-route to his home with his shift ending in 15 minutes. He hit a horse that had gotten out of his pen and  ran into the roadway. The horse went airborne and landed on the top of his patrol car on the driver's side, killing him instantly. He had worked with the Alabama State Troopers for nine years. He leaves behind his wife, Denise and children Brian Keith, Jr. and Leanna Denise.

Sgt. Cliff Stauffer
Raeford, North Carolina
February 18, 2002
Age 33
Cliff was with the department for 16 years. He was killed in a motor vehicle accident when he was struck head on by another vehicle. He was highly decorated and held credentials in advanced certification. Cliff leaves behind his wife and two children.

Sgt. Thomas Hontz
Scottsdale, Arizona

Age 45
Thomas was killed in an explosion, during a SWAT training exercise. The explosion happened near the end of training when a gas ax exploded. Thomas was a 24 year veteran. He was a team leader on the SWAT team. He leaves behind his wife and three sons ages 16, 11 and 5 years old.

Iberville Parish, Louisiana
February 22, 2002
Age 24
"Woody" lost control of his car off duty. He left a two lane road and re-entered crossing the center line in front of former Sheriff Pitre's vehicle. Pitre was treated and released. Woody died at the scene, he was not wearing a seatbelt. He had been on the force for four months. Three years serving as a dispatcher.



Hector (Chino) Manuel Gomez
Marion, Louisiana
March 5, 2002
Age 25
Hector was shot and killed while on a high speed chase. He had responded to a call from a bank when three suspects tried to cash a check. As they fled Hector gave chase. When his vehicle crashed in a ditch and he tried to approach the suspect they shot him. Hector had been with the three-person department for just under one year. He leaves behind his expectant wife.

Chicago, Illinois

Age 47
Donald was shot and killed while trying to make an arrest, serving a warrant on an elderly man. He was a 20 year veteran. Suspect was also shot and killed in the altercation.



Adam Streicher
Peoria, Illinois
March 22, 2002
Age 23
Adam was serving a misdemeanor arrest warrant on a 60 year old man. The man shot and killed Adam in his carport. Taking Adam's weapon and police cruiser suspect then proceeded to another home of a married couple he had been feuding with for 20 plus years, killing them. Suspect in custody now. Please don't under estimate your senior citizens out there.



Senior Constable Glenn McEnallay
Sydney, Australia
April 3, 2002
Age 26
Glenn was shot in the head and chest while he tried to stop a car containing several young men. He remained critically ill after neuro-surgery to remove a bullet lodged near his brain and workmates had maintained a week-long bedside vigil alongside family members. Glenn was to become engaged to his girlfriend Amanda during the Easter holiday. Family members were with Glenn when he died.

Wes Williams
New Orleans, Louisiana

Age 30
Wes was off duty and outside an apartment building when he was shot in the neck and lower back. He had his cell phone in one hand and his gun in the other. His badge was found on the ground near his body. He is survived by his estranged wife and he leaves behind a daughter. Wes had been with the New Orleans Police Department for 16 months.



Sheriff Sam Catron
Somerset, Kentucky
April 13, 2002
Age 48
Sam was shot one time in the head and killed while attending a political rally and fish fry at the Shopville-Stab Volunteer Fire Department. He was apparently walking to his police cruiser when the shot was fired. The suspect was apprehended, the shooting was apparently a part of a vendetta of an officer running against Sam for political office. Sam leaves behind his mother, a brother and two sisters.

George was shot and killed at a house after responding to a report of shots fired. He had been with the White Settlement police department for about 11 years.

David was with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. He had stopped on a routine traffic stop. The suspect exited the vehicle, meeting David half way between the cars and shot David in the upper torso multiple times. David did not shoot his gun. David leaves behind his wife.

Steven was with the auto theft task force. They were attempting to locate possible stolen cars when a man opened fire on the task force, killing Steven.



Kristin M. Pataki
Gaithersburg, Maryland

Age 24
Kristin worked for the Maryland-National Capital Park Police. Kristin was responding to backup another officer. She was killed when her patrol car struck a tree. Her patrol car apparently went out of control on the rain-slick roadway. Kristin was the first to die in the line of duty since the department was founded in 1954. She was with the department for 8 months. She leaves behind her mother, father, grandfather, sister and her fiancé.

Julie Jacks
Chattanooga, Tennessee
May 6, 2002
Age 26
Julie was guarding a male subject at the local hospital. He managed to escape from a male officer on foot pursuit. Scaling a 10 foot fence, Julie pursued him he managed to get her gun from her and threw her to the ground. The suspect then unloaded hers gun minus one round. Julie was shot four to six times, with one of those rounds in the head. She died at the scene. Julie was with the force for three years, was Rookie of the Year last year and was featured on a recent episode of Fox TV's "COPS" series for her work in a prostitution sting. Julie leaves behind her parents, two sisters and fiancé, she was engaged to a fellow police officer.

Roberto Javier Duran

Roberto was with the Border Patrol for four years. His patrol vehicle overturned while on patrol in Arizona. He leaves behind his wife and four children.



Kay Gregory
Indianapolis, Indiana

Age 66
Kay was killed when she was struck by a vehicle that ran a red light while she was traveling to work She worked in the department for 23 years, from 1969 to 1992. Kay entered the force a year after the first female patrol officers took to the streets. For the past 10 years, she worked as a civil deputy for the Marion County Sheriff's Department. She was known as the "mother of the office". She leaves behind four children, 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was looking forward to the first birthday of a great-grandson on Sunday.



Deputy Michael S. Reele

Michael died after a battle with leukemia. He was born Aug. 27 1975
in Lewiston N.Y. After graduating high school mike spent 4yrs in the Air
force as a Military police officer. He had been with the Sedgwick County
Sheriffs dept. for 3 1/2 yrs as a patrol deputy for the sheriffs dept.
He leaves behind a wife Melissa and daughter Alyssa as well as many friends on the sheriffs dept.



Joseph Hanusey
Plumstead Township, Pennsylvania

Age 30
Joseph was responding to backup a fellow officer who did not acknowledge status checks via police radio.  The fellow officer had initiated a traffic stop several minutes prior and his safety, or lack of safety, was not certain.  The weather was horrible, the driving rain and wind made visibility impossible at times.  While enroute to check on one of his brothers, Hanusey lost control of his vehicle and struck several trees on the side of PA Route 611. He was a five year veteran.

Age 47
Dennis was shot to death during a traffic stop. It was his first week of solo street duty. He leaves behind his wife, a son and a daughter.



Detective Wayne Martin & his wife Susan
Norman, Oklahoma
May 21, 2002
Age 49
Wayne and Susan perished in the interstate bridge collapse near Webbers Falls. An out-of-control barge knocked out a 500-foot span of highway just as their silver four-door pickup truck was making its crossing over the treacherous waters some 75 feet below. Wayne was a 27 year veteran of the police dept. Susan was an administrative assistant for the University of Oklahoma with the FAA/ATC Department. Wayne had planned on retiring next year. Wayne and his wife Susan leave behind two daughters.



Robert Taylor
Rocky Boy Tribal PD, Montana
May 27, 2002
Age 43
Robert drowned attempting to rescue a man who capsized a rowboat. He swam 75 feet out to rescue the man and when he was about 15 feet from the boat he went under water and never resurfaced. His body was recovered two days later. The man he was trying to rescue was saved by other people at the scene.



Deputy Shane Bennett
Houston, Texas
June 12, 2002
Age 29
Shane was killed by friendly fire when he and fellow deputies walked into a gang related home invasion. They had no choice since the caller stated the mother was being hit with a pistol. Shane was an eight year veteran and leaves behind his wife of four years and a 20 month old daughter.

Trooper Michael Rao

Michael was hit by a stranded drivers truck. As he was approaching the driver's side of the truck, the truck rolled back, struck the rear of Michaels car, hitting him. He suffered a broken leg, pelvis and head injuries. He leaves behind his wife and a 2 year old daughter. A fund can be donated to the family at any South Carolina First Citizens Bank.



Deputy Richard Herzog
King County, Washington
June 22, 2002
Age 24
Richard was shot with his own gun, once in the hip and four times in the back of his head. He was trying to subdue a man who was running around naked shouting obscenities and acting violently. He had tried to stop the man with pepper spray but missed and his gun was knocked to the ground. The suspect picked up the gun, loaded it and shot Richard. He leaves behind his wife and two daughters.

Jason Wright

Age 24
Jason shot and killed himself in an apparent accident. He was scheduled to graduate at the end of the month from the Academy. Jason was cleaning his gun at his mothers home. He was accidentally shot in the chest. There was one bullet still in the chamber.



Deputy Kevin J. Tarsia
Kirkwood, New York
July 4, 2002
Age 36
Kevin was shot 15 times and ran over by a vehicle. Three males ages 22-23 had used a stolen pick up truck in a burglary to steal guns. Kevin had witnessed the men transferring the guns from one vehicle to another in a park. The men opened fire on him. Kevin was a thirteen year veteran.



Retired Officer Mike Bradbury
Little Rock, Arkansas

Mike was a 12 year veteran of the Benton Police Department who suffered kidney failure in 1997 and retired medically. He had been awaiting the availability of a kidney for a transplant but his heart and body just could not wait any longer. Mike leaves behind his mother and three daughters.

Boone, North Carolina
July 17, 2002
Age 46
Bob was killed when the small plane he was in crashed. He had two fellow officers with him. The officers at the time of the crash were using the plane to spot growing marijuana fields in the area. Bob leaves behind his wife and a seven year old son.



Richard Edward Ashley, Jr.
Chowan County, North Carolina
July 17, 2002
Age 34
Richard was with the Sheriff's Department. He was killed with two fellow officers in a small plane crash. The officers at the time of the crash were using the plane to spot growing marijuana fields in the area.



Sgt. Anthony Scott Futrell
Charlotte-Mecklenburg, North Carolina
July 17, 2002
Age 38
Anthony died with two fellow officers in a plane crash. Anthony was piloting the plane when it crashed near the North Carolina coast in Chowan County. The officers at the time of the crash were using the plane to spot growing marijuana fields in the area.



Robert Etter
Brown County, Wisconsin

Age 56
Robert was with a trainee at an intersection waiting for traffic to clear. Another vehicle hit their cruiser going 65-70 mph, striking the drivers door, lifting both cars. When a passerby went to assist the driver of the other vehicle he told him "You don't understand, I did it on purpose". Robert was a 30 year veteran. God Bless.



Stephanie Markins

Stephanie is the rookie that was with Robert when their vehicle was struck. She had been with the department for two months. Stephanie also had worked for the Brillion Police Dept for appx. three years prior.



Jessica Wilson
Hazel Park, Michigan

Age 26
Jessica was shot in the face and killed when she responded to an animal complaint. As she exited her patrol car a man standing on the porch suddenly opened fire on her with a shotgun, striking her in the face, neck and stomach. She was able to return fire and wounded the suspect. Although she was wearing her vest she suffered fatal wounds and succumbed to her to wounds at the hospital. Jessica had been with the agency for just under two years and leaves behind her husband.



Melissa Schmidt
Minneapolis, Minnesota
August 1, 2002
Age 35
Melissa died of a gun shot wound responding to a call of a woman having a gun. Even though it wasn't her precinct, she knew the housing unit. The 60 year old woman with the gun asked to go to the bathroom. She had the gun hidden between her buttocks and started shooting at Melissa and her partner. The suspect was also killed.



Chris Russell
New Orleans, Louisiana
August 4, 2002
Age 35
Chris was shot and killed while responding to an armed robbery call at a bar. He arrived on the scene, three suspects exited the bar and opened fire on the officers before they even exited their patrol car, striking Chris in the head. The other two suspects remain at large. Chris was assigned to the 5th District and had been with the agency for five years. He leaves behind by his expectant wife and 13-month-old child.



Eric B. Taylor
Massillon, Ohio
August 9, 2002
Age 31
Eric was shot and killed following a vehicle pursuit and foot pursuit. The chase began when a state trooper made a traffic stop. During the stop the suspect opened fire on the trooper and fled. The suspect's vehicle became stuck in a field and Eric and the suspect exchanged gunfire while still in their vehicles. The suspect then fled on foot and continued to exchange gunfire as they pursued him. Both Eric and the suspect were fatally wounded. Eric was with the dept for four years and leaves behind his wife and two young children.



Kris Eggle

Age 28
Kris was shot and killed when a bullet deflected off his radio and entered under his body armor. The suspect that shot him was then killed by a Mexican Police officer across the border. Kris died after an attempt to give him CPR. Kris was a native of Cadillac, Michigan.



Hakim Farthing

Hakim was struck by a drunk driver who was traveling at an extremely high speed. The driver drove thru flare patterns and traffic cones before striking him. He was killed instantly. Hakim had been on the job for 20 months. He leaves behind a three year old child.



John Darrell Rounsalville
Pearl River, Louisiana

John was a fire fighter at the time of his death. He used to be with the PD. John died of kidney failure, he leaves behind his son age two.



Scott Stewart
Detroit, Michigan
August 11, 2002
Age 31
Scott was shot and killed as he placed a suspect under arrest for illegally possessing a handgun. He and his partner were answering a call regarding a group of men gambling on the sidewalk. When they arrived Scott discovered one man was carrying a concealed handgun. As he was cuffing the suspect another man approached from behind and fired one shot at his head. He was rushed to the hospital where he died several hours later from his wound. The suspect fled the scene but turned himself in the following day. Scott was assigned to the 9th Precinct and had been with the agency for five years. He is survived by his fiance, also a Detroit Police Officer.



Tony Folk
Tampa, Florida
August 21, 2002
Tony was an Air Force Security Police Officer. He died as a result of his motorcycle being hit by a careless driver and the fuel tank exploding causing 3rd degree burns over 50% of his body and several compound fractures. He leaves behind a fiance, several family members and many good memories.



Crystal D. Sheffield
Baltimore, Maryland

Crystal died from injuries when her patrol car collided with an unmarked patrol car responding to the back up of another officer. Both vehicles were responding with lights and sirens. Crystal was with the department for 3 years. She leaves behind her husband and eleven year old son.



Mary Beall
Dayton, Ohio
August 25, 2002
Age 43
In May 2000, Mary was shot in the line of duty. Mary sustained a shot from a .30 caliber handgun in her neck and through the shoulders which paralyzed her. Today, over 2 years after the shooting, Mary died. Prosecutors are looking at asking for the death penalty for her assailant, who was found guilty and sentenced to prison for the shooting. Mary was with the force for three years. She leaves behind her husband a son and two daughters. Her husband is also a police officer with Dayton PD.



Steven E. Graham
Barrington-Inverness, Illinois
August 25, 2002
Age 53
Steven suffered a fatal heart attack while attempting to arrest a man during a call. He had responded to the man's home and the suspect began struggling with him. During the attempted arrest of the suspect Steven collapsed. The man had a history of interfering with police radio frequencies. His death was ruled as a homicide as a result of the arrest. Steven was with the department for 29 years. He leaves behind his wife and two daughters.



Disdale Enton
New York City, New York
August 28, 2002
Age 34
Disdale suffered a brain aneurysm while chasing a domestic violence suspect on foot and died as a result four days later. He and his partner pursued the suspect on foot, jumping over fences and running through backyards. When they started walking out of a backyard Disdale fell to the ground. He was taken to the hospital where he was declared brain dead. He was removed from life support four days later and his organs were donated for transplant. Disdale worked with the 113th Precinct in Jamaica, Queens and had been with the agency for four years. He leaves behind his fiancee and mother.

Age 53
James was shot and killed while trying to serve a warrant for a psychiatric treatment. The suspect was aprehended.

Michael Barwick

Age 27
Michael was killed in an automobile accident while chasing a stolen vehicle. A minivan collided with the car Michael and his partner were in. The car went airborn, landing on its side and into flames. Michael died from his injuries. He had been with the department for two years.



Wendell B. Howland

Age 59
Wendell died at his home after battling cancer. He was a 16 year veteran of the Sparta PD. He leaves behind his wife, two daughters, granddaughter, parents and a brother and a sister.



Deputy Sheriff Brad A. Anderson
St. Louis County, Minnesota
September 2, 2002
Age 50
Brad was killed when his patrol car collided with a minivan while he and his partner were responding to a call at a group home. His partner was driving at the time. Brad was a native of Ely and had been with the department for 11 years.



Lieutenant Billy Jiles
Carroll County Sheriff's Department, Georgia

Billy was shot multiple times and killed. He was assisting in a call for an arson suspect that was threatening to burn his ex-wives house down. A suicide note indicates the suspect was attempting suicide-by-cop. The suspect shot at Billy several times with two hand guns. Billy was not wearing his vest. He was with the Department for 20 years. He leaves behind his wife and two young children.

Sam died after his patrol car collided with another car. Witnesses saw him slumped over his steering wheel shortly before is car plunged into the bushes of a local business. In 2000, Simmons, a quiet but straightforward speaker, was elected to head the office he had been a part of since he was 20 years old. He was essentially hand-picked by former Sheriff Johnny Mack Brown, his mentor. Sam was with the department for 29 years. He leaves behind his wife and two children, ages 8 and 20.

Mike was killed when his patrol vehicle collided with a deer that had just been struck by another vehicle. The deer was thrown into the air and landed on his vehicle. He was on patrol in the Chippewa National Forest's Catholic Ranger District near Bemidji, Minnesota. Mike leaves behind his wife and two small sons.

Conrad was intentionally struck by the vehicle a suspect was driving while fleeing the scene of a domestic dispute. He was with the department for 12 years. He leaves behind his wife and three young children.

Charles was killed when his motorcycle went out of control and struck the center median guardrail while attempting to approach a speeding vehicle. He had been with the department for 7 years and leaves behind his wife and a one year old daughter.

Wayne was killed when his motorcycle was struck by a vehicle that pulled out in his path. He was thrown over the vehicle and died from his injuries shortly after. He was with the department for ten years and leaves behind his wife, who is with-child.



Eric J. Autobee

Age 23
Eric was beaten to death after being attacked by an inmate in the kitchen. The inmate struck Eric in the back of the head in an unprovoked attack. Eric had been with the agency for 20 months.

Rick was killed when he was driving in front of a construction vehicle (escorting it) and a drunk driver changed lanes to go around the construction vehicle then veered back into the right lane ramming Rick's car.Rick was working overtime detail at the time. Rick was truly one of the nicest people you could ever meet; the kind that would take the shirt off of his own back if you needed it. He was with the department for 8 years. He leaves behind his parents, a sister and a brother who is a police officer in Colorado.



Trooper C. Mark Cosslett

Mark was killed in a motorcycle accident. He was reporting to an unfounded report regarding the sniper shootings in the area. A tow-truck went onto the shoulder from the right lane and Marks motorcycle hit it killing him instantly. Mark was with the department of 16 years and leaves behind his wife, a 3 year old son and a 2 year old daughter.



Catherine Hill

Catherine was a Senior Patrol Agent. She was killed in an automobile accident when her Jeep Wrangler went over an embankment and rolled several times. She was ejected and was found by a maintenance worker. Catherine had been with the agency for two years.

Age 44
Wasyl was killed in an automobile when he was enroute to lunch. He was struck by a recycling truck and then pushed into the back of an oncoming pickup truck, where he was thrown from the vehicle. Wasyl had been with the agency for 15 years and leaves behind his wife.



James Shields
Buffalo, New York

Age 35
James was killed in an automobile accident while he and his partner were chasing a robbery suspect that had apparently gotten on a bus. While trying to catch up to the bus another vehicle turned in front of them. James swerved to avoid the car and hit a tree. His partner was also injured. James died of his injuries at the hospital. He leaves behind his two sons.

Michael was killed in an automobile accident while responding to a report of poachers head-lighting deer. He lost control of his department pick up truck and struck a pine tree. He was with the department for nine years. Michael leaves behind his wife and two children.

Dale was shot 4 times, once in the back of the head. He was ambushed while responding to a home-invasion robbery. Suspect was arrested after a chase and shootout. Dale had been with the agency for thirteen years. He leaves behind his wife and three children.

David was struck by a vehicle driven by another prison employee. He was jogging along the left side of a training team, calling cadence when the female employee struck him.

Ronald was shot in the head and killed by a sixteen year old boy. The boy was wanted for several robberies. When Ronald spotted him there was a foot chase. The boy try to steal two vehicles to get away and was unsuccessful. He was chased into a nearby park by fellow officers where he then committed suicide. Ronald was with the department for eight years. He leaves behind his wife.

Joseph was shot and killed while interrupting a robbery at a fast food restaurant. He was not on duty at the time. He exchanged gunfire with the suspect and was shot in the chest. Joseph had been with the department for ten years. He leaves behind his 4 year old son.



David Frank Mobilio

Age 31
David was shot two times and killed during an ambush while getting gas at a gas station. The suspect was arrested a week later in New Hampshire and stated that he killed David to protests police brutality. The gas station was frequented by department vehicles. David had been with the department for four years and was the departments DARE officer. He leaves behind his wife and a 2 year old son.

James was killed in an automobile accident. He was transporting inmates when the vehicle was struck head-on by a tractor trailer. They had stopped to help a stranded vehicles with a flat tire when the other driver struck both their vehicles killing them instantly. William had been with the department for almost two years. Christopher was killed on Thanksgiving afternoon when he was involved in an automobile accident while responding to a train-car collision. His patrol car went out of control on a bypass, overturned and struck a light pole. The car burst into flames and burned so hot that rounds from his gun began to discharge. Christopher was a Trooper and had been with the Highway Patrol for three and a half years and was a former Enid police officer. He leaves behind his wife.

Lawrence was shot in the face, leg and hip while investigating a suspicious man dressed in camouflage on May 10, 1999. He slipped into a coma until passing away on this day. He leaves behind his parents.

David was shot and killed by a man during a domestic dispute. He had attempted to kick in the door of a house where the man was holding a woman hostage and the man fired two rounds at him. He was wearing his vest but one bullet passed thru an opening. David was with the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department. He leaves behind his wife, four daughters, parents, brother and seven grandchildren.

Christopher was standing next to his marked patrol car when the rear of a tractor trailer struck him as it exited the toll booth while conducting seatbelt enforcement on the New Jersey Turnpike. He had been with the agency for 15 years..

George was shot and killed as he and other members of the Narcotics Unit were serving a warrant. After knocking and identifying themselves no one responded and no one answered. Shots were fired from inside and he was struck in the shoulder. George had been with the agency for eight years. He leaves behind his wife and two children.

Shannon suffered a fatal heart attack during a physical training exercise. He was a Sergeant with the Corrections Dept. for 12 years. He leaves behind his father.



Sharon Joann Barnes

Age 48
Sharon was shot and killed when returning to the scene of a double murder. When she asked if the suspect was home he opened fire, shooting her in the head and in the torso. She was a Deputy Sheriff with the agency for nine years.

Howard died of injuries from a vehicle accident six days prior. His car was struck by a tractor trailer. He had been with the department for 11 years and leaves behind his wife, children, grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Tom was killed while flying an aircraft while assisting a moose tracking survey in Alaska. He had over 11,000 hours of flight time in command and had been with the agency for twelve years. Tom leaves behind his wife and three children.

Bobby was struck and killed by a vehicle that hydroplaned while assisting at an accident on the highway. He had been with the Sheriff's Department for 18 years.



Christopher Betts
East Point, Georgia

Age 26
Christopher was killed when he was hit by three separate cars while assisting another officer struggling with a suspect on the side of the interstate. The other officer was struck too and was rushed to the hospital. One of the vehicles that struck Christopher fled the scene. Christopher had been with the department for two years. He leaves behind his wife and a 7 week old son.



Joe McGarry

Age 28
Joe was shot and killed when he and his partner were investigating suspicious people at a restaurant on the highway. They asked the four people to step out of the restaurant when one of them pulled out a .45 handgun and shot Joe in the head. Joe had been with the agency for four years and was assigned to the Street Crimes Unit.
