Dennis was struck and killed by a patrol car after laying down stop sticks during a high-speed chase. He had been with the agency for four years. Dennis leaves behind his three children and parents.


Anthony Johnson
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Age 46
Anthony died of a heart attack after struggling with a student at the local high school. He was a volunteer as a part-time basketball coach, when the suspect created a disturbance Anthony asked him to leave. Upon escorting the suspect and hand cuffing him Anthony had the heart attack. He was a Detective with the PD for 22 years.

Age 49
Steve was the National President of the Fraternal Order of Police since 2001. He lost his battle to cancer. Steve leaves behind his wife and two children.

Andre was backing his patrol car up when it crashed through a fence and plunged into the water. He drowned when the car sank in a 30-foot pond. He had been with the agency for two years and leaves behind his parents.

Adam was killed when his car struck a tree while trying to swerve to avoid another vehicle. He was en-route to assist another officer. He had been with the agency for five years and leaves behind an 8 month old daughter.

Sheila Herring-Patrick

Age 39
Sheila was shot and killed while responding to a shooting call at a bar. She was wearing her vest, but was shot three times and one of the shots hit her in the lower stomach. Sheila had been with the agency for 11 months. She had previously worked for the Detroit PD 10 years and with the Norfolk Airport PD for 3 years.

Deborah Jean Hobbs

Age 39
Deborah was a Reserved Deputy. She died 12 days after she had been involved in a car accident after hitting a patch of black ice. She had never regained consciousness. She had been with the department for two years and leaves behind her husband, who is also a reserve deputy.


Peggy Kernan
California
January 18, 2003
Age 65
Peggy died of cancer. She was with the Department of Corrections for 32 years. She retired in 1995 as Warden at the California State Prison Solano. Peggy was one of the first women to work in a supervisory capacity at San Quentin State Prison. She leaves behind her son Scott and her daughter Darby. God Bless her.


Joseph N. Sachatello III

Joseph was killed in an automobile accident while responding to a call. His car left the road and hit a tree. Joseph had been with the agency for 2 1/2 years and leaves behind his wife, infant son, parents and two sisters.


Sergeant William Gruenes

Age 33
William died when an automobile ran a stop sign and struck his car. He died at the scene. The suspect was arrested for being under the influence of marijuana. William had been with the agency for five years. He leaves behind his wife and two daughters.


Deputy David Jones
Garfield County, Utah
January 26, 2003
Age 44
David was shot and killed during a routine traffic stop. The driver failed a sobriety test and was cuffed. A tow truck was called to collect the vehicle. The passenger pulled out a rifle that was loaded with ammunition to penetrate a bullet-proof vest and shot David. The suspects fled and the tow truck driver found David wounded, called for help, but he died before the ambulance could arrive. David had been with the agency for 16 months. He leaves behind his wife and five children.


Trooper Michael Todd Blanton

Age 29
Michael was killed after stopping a driver suspected of driving under the influence. He reached inside the car, the driver sped off, dragging Michael. The car crashed and rolled over, pinning Michael underneath. Michael was with the agency for five years. He had also served with the Henrico Sheriff's Dept for two years and as a United States Policeman for four years. He leaves behind his wife and his 6 year-old son.


Supervisor Stanley A. Wiley
Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Texas

Age 38
Stanley was stabbed to death when he was attacked in the shoe factory of the prison. His throat was slashed with a knife used to trim shoes. He died four hours after the attack.


Corporal Edward W. Davenport
Long Beach, California
February 4, 2003
Age 63
Edward fell off a ladder, sustaining a serious head injury, while doing maintenance at the departments firing range. He was the Range Master. He was found by a fellow officer but died the following day from his injuries. Edward had been with the department for 40 years and had been a member of the SWAT team for 30 years. He leaves behind his wife, daughter and two sons.

Age 36
Brian was electrocuted when an electrical cable from a utility pole touched him while he was at a car accident. He had been with the agency for nine years. Brian leaves behind his wife, a ten year old daughter and a nine year old son.

Age 22
Eric was killed when his patrol car struck a fire hydrant while trying to avoid a car that pulled out in front of him and his partner. He had been with the agency for four months. Eric leaves behind his wife and a 1 month old daughter.

Age 61
George was struck and killed by a drunk driver while assisting a minor traffic accident. He had been a member of the PD for 29 years. George leaves behinds his two sons and his brother, who is also with the same agency.

Jeremy Jay Carruth

Jay was shot and killed trying to arrest a suspect. The suspect had ambushed an officer the previous day. The suspect was also killed in the attempt to arrest him. Jay had been with the agency almost three years. He also served in the 239th Military Police, National Guard.

David was shot and killed trying to arrest a suspect. The suspect had ambushed an officer the previous day. The suspect was also killed in the attempt to arrest him. David had been with the agency for almost four years.

Lieutenant Glenn Hicks

Glenn was shot in the face and killed as he and his partner responded to a residence. The resident was mentally disturbed and ambushed the officers. He had been with the reserve deputy office for five years and had been a full-time deputy for only three days. His son is also a deputy with the Sheriff's Office. Glenn leaves behind his wife, a son, two brothers and a grand-daughter.

Chief Ernest J. Leatherbury

Ernest died from a heart attack after helping other officers subdue a suspect. An hour later at a meeting he collapsed. Ernest had been with the agency for six years and had been with the Maryland State Police for 25 years. He leaves behind his wife, three sons, five grandchildren and nine siblings.

Age 32
Michael was shot and killed when responding to a call. A homeowner had threatened a high way crew. When Michael went to approach the homeowner he was shot. Michael was with the Sheriff's Dept. for eight years. He leaves behind his parents, brother and a sister.


James Branson
St. Louis, Missouri
March 9, 2003
Age 36
James was involved in a car accident on February 14, 2003. He and his partner were chasing a car that was earlier involved in a car jacking. They collided with an S.U.V. He died on March 9th when a blood clot traveled from his ankle to his hear and lungs. James was with the department for four years. He leaves behind his wife and four children.

Age 36
James was killed when a gun deal went bad. He was with his partner who also died. He was with the department for seven years. James was known among fellow officers as the "Haitian Prince" and the "Haitian Sensation" for his meticulous wardrobe. He leaves behind his wife two sons ages 7 and 5 and a 20 month old daughter. His wife is also a police officer.

Age 41
Philip was killed when a tow truck struck his vehicle at an intersection. He was ejected from the car. Philip had been with the agency for 16 years. He leaves behind his wife, six children and seven brothers and sisters. One of his brothers is also with the Chicago Police Department.

Age 45
Brent was killed in a car accident. His car left the roadway, went down an embankment and struck a tree. He was wearing his seatbelt. He was with the Sheriff's Dept. assigned to San Gorgonio Pass. Brent leaves behind his wife and six children.


David P. Land
Forsyth County, Georgia
March 26, 2003
Age 32
David was killed when his motorcycle collided with two cars on the way to a fight call. He had been promoted to Sergeant two days prior. David was with the department for 5 years and in law enforcement for 12 years. He leaves behind his wife and 6 year old daughter.


Deputy Marshal Glen Devanie
Alexandria City, Louisianna
April 2, 2003
Age 25
Glen was killed in an car accident while responding to help another deputy in a foot pursuit. A car pulled out in front of him, he swerved to avoid a collision and hit several utility poles, causing him to be ejected from his vehicle. The car that pulled out in front of him did not stop and has not been identified. Glen was a former Explorer. He was deputy marshal for 6 years. Glen leaves behind his wife, 18-month-old daughter, and 3-week-old son.


Investigator Antonio Jose (Joe) Sapinoso
Greenville County Sheriff's Office, South Carolina
April 2, 2003
Age 34
Joe was shot and killed after he was taken hostage when he arrived home from work. He had been involved in a domestic disturbance with his sister and the suspect in a previous incident as a deputy and as her brother. The suspect approached him at gunpoint and disarmed him, handcuffing Joe with his own handcuffs and took him in the house where he forced Joe to call his father into the living room. The suspect held both men at gunpoint for several hours with while SWAT officers tried to negotiate. Finally the suspect told negotiators he was coming out of the house but without warning he shot and killed Joe and his father. He then surrendered. Joe was with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office for 6 years and was assigned to the White Collar Crime Unit. He leaves behind his mother and sister.


Charles R. Clark
Houston, Texas
April 3, 2003
Age 45
Charles was shot in the head and killed while responding to a silent alarm call. He didn't realize the three suspects had all ready killed a female inside. The suspects were apprehended the following day. Charles was one day away from celebrating his 20th year with the department. He leaves behind his wife.

Age 51
Michael died of a fatal heart attack while helping to assist in an inmate that was attempting to hang himself. He had been with the agency for 14 years and leaves behind his wife and two children.


Phillip Guy Billings
Broward County, Florida
April 6, 2003
Age 25
Phillip was shot and killed working off duty at a car dealership. The two suspects were found dead 4 days later of apparent suicide. Phillip was a Deputy Sheriff with the department for 18 months. He leaves behind his parents, brother and sister.


Melvin Collins
Brunswick, Georgia
April 11, 2003
Age 31
Melvin was shot and killed during a robbery when he was on an off-duty job at a grocery store. he had just graduated from the academy and was to be sworn in on the following Monday. Melvin leaves behind his wife and two children.


Jose Arturo (Joe) Herrera
Friona, Texas
April 13, 2003
Age 31
Joe was killed when his vehicle was intentionally struck in the driver's door by a suspects vehicle. The suspect was being chased by other officers. Joe had been at the station doing paper work when he heard the call and left to help.


Ray Giacomelli
Pittsburg, California
April 15, 2003
Age 46
Ray was shot and killed while investigating a murder. He had gone into a home that he thought was vacant. The suspect, a recent parolee was there though and shot and killed Ray execution style. The suspect was shot and killed two nights later by officers. Ray had been with the agency for 23 years. He leaves behind two teenage daughters.


Eddie Mundo Jr.
LaGrange, New York
April 16, 2003
Age 29
Eddie was killed when his vehicle was struck by a suspects car that he was pursuing. He was a deputy for the Jefferson County Sheriffs Department for four years before working with the LaGrange Police Department. Eddie leaves behind his wife and one year old son.


Randy Smith
Evangeline Parish, Louisiana
April 16, 2003
Age 32
Randy was shot in the chest and killed while trying to serve a search warrant. He managed to get away from the residence to a yard next door, but officers were unable to tend to his wounds because of gunfire. Randy was a Deputy with the department for three years. He leaves behind his wife and 10 year old son.


Mary Ann Collura
Fair Lawn, New Jersey
April 17, 2003
Age 43
Mary Ann was shot four times and killed by a suspect she was trying to help apprehend. The suspect was shot and killed in Florida four days later by law enforcement. Mary Ann had been with the department for 18 years and had been a special officer for an additional two years. She was the departments first female officer. Mary Ann leaves behind her mother, brother and two sisters.


Aaron J. Blount
Fulton County, Georgia
April 22, 2003
Age 26
Aaron was found in his department vehicle shot twice in the head and once in the shoulder. His vehicle was still in drive and resting against rail road tracks. In spite of a manhunt no suspects were found. Aaron had been with the department for three years. He leaves behind his fiancée and 13 month old son.

Age 42
Gerald was struck by a vehicle while conducting radar speed checks. He died ten days after he sustained the injuries. Gerald had been with the department for 17 years. He leaves behind his 15 year old daughter.


Cole Martin
Chatsworth, Georgia
April 25, 2003
Age 20
Cole was killed when his patrol car struck a parking lot gate. The arm of the gate went thru the car and struck him in the neck. Cole had been with the department for a mere seven months.


Toney Clayton Summey
Randolph County, North Carolina
April 27, 2003
Age 41
Toney was shot and killed with his own service weapon during a warrant from the previous night. As he reached for his pepper spray the suspect got his gun and shot Toney three times in the chest. The other Deputy retreated to his car for back up and suspect was apprehended with back up. Toney had been with the Randolph County Sheriff's Department for four years. He leaves behind his wife and two children.


Michael Hartzell
Youngstown, Ohio
April 29, 2003
Age 26
A shooting took place at a bar on in which one victim was wounded. The suspect fled in a silver Lincoln. Michael was in the area and spotted the Lincoln, getting behind the vehicle and running the license plate. Witness statements say the suspect exited his vehicle and ran to Michael's cruiser, firing three rounds at him. The suspect then fled the scene, abandoning his Lincoln several streets away and fleeing on foot. Michael was rushed to the hospital, where trauma teams did all they could to save Michael's life. He was pronounced dead a short time later. Michael had been with the department for three years. He leaves behind his fiancée, parents and a brother.


John R. Thomas
Chicago, Illinois

Age 53
John was the first deputy superintendent for the Chicago Police. He died after collapsing in his home, possibly from a heart attack. He worked for the department for 33 years. He leaves behind his wife and two daughters.


Randall Spearman
Folsom, Louisiana

Age 57
Randall was stuck and killed by a car while directing traffic. The suspect was not charged.


Scott Allen Hylton
Christiansburg, Virginia
May 9, 2003
Age 43
Scott was shot and killed with his own service gun when he responded to a shoplifting call. He did not have a chance to get out of the car when the suspect attacked him. Once Scott got out of the car the suspect knocked him to the ground shooting him. Scott had been with the department for only 1 year but had been in law enforcement for 20 years. Serving with the Hillsville PD, Radford University PD and Floyd County Sheriff Dept. He leaves behind his wife. four children parents and a sister.


Bruce Lee

Age 45
Bruce was beaten to death with his own baton. He had answered a call to a domestic disturbance. The suspect was trying to break into his parents home. Bruce died from head injuries. He was with the sheriff's department for 22 years.


Shelby Green
Anderson County, Texas
May 15, 2003
Age 39
Shelby was shot and killed during a burglary attempt. He chased the suspects in a short pursuit and his body was found near the roadway. Shelby had been a sergeant with the department for 10 years. He leaves behind his wife and three children.


Jim Mulay
Peoria County, Illinois

Age 30
Jim was killed when his patrol car was broad-sided by a drunk driver at an intersection. He had been with the Sheriff's Department for 7 years. He was also supervisor of the Explorer Post and a member of the ERT team. Jim leaves behind his wife, two young sons and parents.


Douglas W. Bryant

Age 62
Douglas was killed when a suspect he had pulled over took off and Douglas chased him. The suspect deliberately struck his vehicle so it would overturn. Although he was wearing his seatbelt, he died later of his injuries. Douglas was with the department for 14 years. He leaves behind his wife and 16 year old daughter.

Robert was accidentally shot and killed when his gun discharged while he was cleaning it. The incident happened at his office. He had been with the department for 30 years and leaves behind his son and daughter.

Michael was killed when his Crown Victoria was struck from behind while he was making a traffic stop. The car burst into flames with him trapped inside. He had been with the department for two years. Michael leaves behind his wife and two young sons.

Age 50
Jerry was killed in an automobile accident while returning from a work detail. The patrol car hydroplaned, went off the roadway and struck several trees.

Patrick was shot and killed when he located a suspect while investigating a hit and run. He had been with the department as a reserve officer for 11 years and as a full time officer for 19 months. He leaves behind his wife and three children.

Jeremiah was killed when his vehicle crossed the center line on a sharp curve and collided head on with a tractor trailer. He had been with the Sheriff's department for one and a half years. He leaves behind his wife and three children.


Ryan E. Cappelletty

Age 23
Ryan was shot and killed while responding to a call of shots fired. When he and another officer responded there was a suspect standing on the front lawn, who opened fire. He had been with the department after graduating from the academy only 5 months prior. Ryan leaves behind his wife.


Joshua Clyde Lancaster

Age 27
Joshua was on patrol working a crime pattern when a suspect that was being chased for kidnapping broad-sided his vehicle and killing him. The pregnant woman that was kidnapped was also killed. Joshua was not aware that the chase was going on. He had been with the Sheriff's department for two years. Joshua leaves behind his wife.

Joshua was shot and killed when he was called while off duty to assist on a domestic disturbance call. He had been with the Sheriff's department for four years. Joshua leaves behind his three young children.

Anthony was killed when his patrol car was struck by a tractor trailer, that pushed his vehicle 100 yards. The driver of the trailer was found with drug paraphernalia in his possession and the truck had faulty brakes. Anthony was a Trooper for 6 years and also served with the Buncombe County Sheriffs Office for 3 years. he leaves behind his wife and a three year old son.

Age 41
Matt was killed in an airplane accident while on a search and rescue mission for a missing woman. She was found later in the afternoon. The pilot was also killed. Matt had been with the department for 13 years.


Charles (Bo) Harrison
Pasco County, Florida

Age 56
Bo was on surveillance near a nightclub. A nineteen year old sniper shot him with the bullet going thru the trunk and shooting him in the back. Bo was a Vietnam veteran, he was 15 days away from retirement. He had been with the department for 31 years. He leaves behind his wife and two children.


Arnold Strickland
Fayette, Alabama
June 7, 2003
Arnold was shot and killed by a suspect that grabbed a service weapon while being booked. Another officer and a dispatcher were also killed. The suspect fled in a patrol car and was later apprehended. Arnold had 23 years of law enforcement experience. He was with the department for three years. He leaves behind his three children and a grand child.


James Crump

Age 40
James was shot and killed by a suspect that grabbed a service weapon while being booked. Another officer and a dispatcher were also killed. The suspect fled in a patrol car and was later apprehended. James had 10 years of law enforcement experience. He was a Corporal with the department for two and a half years. He leaves behind his son.


Leslie "Ace" Mealer

Leslie was shot and killed by a suspect that grabbed a service weapon while being booked. Another officer and a dispatcher were also killed. The suspect fled in a patrol car and was later apprehended. Leslie was a dispatcher with the department.

Age 22
Joseph was killed when his vehicle left the road, struck an embankment and rolled. He was with the department for 17 months and was previously worked as a detention officer for one year.


Darla Lathrem
Florida Department of Corrections, Florida

Age 38
Darla was killed when 3 of the 5 inmates she was supervising building a new dormitory for the maximum prison attempted to escape. One of the inmates not willing to participate in the escape was also killed. Darla had been with the Department of Corrections for one year.


Tony Zeppetella
Oceanside, California
June 13, 2003
Age 27
Tony was shot in the neck and killed when he stopped a known gang members vehicle in the parking lot of a bank. The suspect stole Tony's car and barricaded himself in his parents home. He surrendered after 4 hours. Tony had been with the department for 13 months. He leaves behind his wife and his six month old son.

Michael Johnson
Vermont State Police, Vermont
June 15, 2003
Age 39
Michael was struck and killed by a suspects vehicle after laying spikes in the road. Other officers were in pursuit of the suspect and he swerved to avoid the spikes, striking Michael. Michael was a Sergeant and had been with the agency for 16 years. He leaves behind his wife, two sons and a daughter.

Gerald was responding to an accident with injuries. He was negotiating a curve and a street sweeper was in front of him with the driver outside the vehicle. He swerved to miss the collision and lost control of his patrol car. The collision killed both him and the driver of the street sweeper. Kevin was shot and killed while attempting to help other officers serve a warrant for solicitation of prostitution to a male. As the team entered the home Kevin was reportedly shot in the side, between his vest panels. Information from other sources say that he was not hit in the side and the bullet went thru his vest. The suspect has been shot and killed. Kevin was with the department for 8 years. He leaves behind his wife and two children.

Mike was killed when his patrol car was struck head-on by another vehicle on an unlined county road. He was responding to a call of a suspicious vehicle. Ironically the car that Mike was struck by was the same person that made the report of the suspicious vehicle. Mike was with the Sheriffs Office for 14 years.

Steven died from a heart attack while conducting a training exercise with members of the Oregon Air National Guard. He was renewing his duty certification He was doing an exercise with another guardsman who was on the ground, handcuffed him and began searching him. As he was about to complete the search, he suddenly collapsed and fell on top of the guardsman. Steven was with the Portland Air Base Police Department for 6 months. He had a total of 27 years in law enforcement, and had previously served with the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, Warrenton Police Department, Warm Springs Tribal Police Department, Crook County Sheriff's Office, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Stanfield Police Department, and Lake County Sheriff's Office. Steven leaves behind his three children.

He was responding to the scene of a fire when his vehicle was struck by a deer, he lost control of his vehicle and hit a utility pole. He managed to get out of the car and was taken to the hospital, later released to go home. At home he collapsed and died as a result of the injuries. Richard had been with the department for 15 years. He leaves behind his wife and four children.

He was with the department for seven months and was previously with the Honolulu PD for seven years. Patrick leaves behind his wife and two children.

Stephen was shot and killed after responding to a trespassing call. A person called in saying they heard 6 gun shots and when officers went to look for Stephen they discovered his body. He had been shot 6 times and his feet were tied together and his body was dragged through the desert. The theory is that he had uncovered a meth lab before he was killed. Stephen was with the Sheriffs Office for 12 years and he leaves behind his wife and son.

Jim was sitting in a rolling chair on a deck investigating the theft of a stolen lawn mower. The chair started rolling back and he fell 5 feet to the ground. He suffered several broken bones and a torn aorta and succumbed to his injuries. He was a Detective with the agency for 13 years and is survived by his wife.

Rodney was shot and killed while attempting to serve a narcotics warrant on a man for selling crack cocaine. When he and another deputy arrived at the home, the suspect's mother told them the suspect wasn't there. The mother then allowed them to search the house. The suspect was hiding in a bedroom. He was able to run into another room and close the door. When the deputies kicked the door in the man opened fire, shooting Rodney in the side, in between the panels of his vest. The suspect was also killed when the deputies returned fire. Rodney had been with the agency for 2.5 years and served with the Newport News Sheriff's Department for 5 years and the Middle Peninsula Regional Jail for 3.5 years. He leaves behind by his expectant wife and two children.

Anthony was shot and killed after responding to a domestic violence call. After he entered the residence, the suspect shot a woman who was inside in the arm and leg. Anthony was shot in the head when he struggled with the suspect. The suspect was shot and killed while he tried to escape out the back of the house, by another officer. Anthony was with the agency for seven years and leaves behind his wife, a Deputy Jailer, two sons and a daughter.

He was a Sergeant and with the department for 8 years. Tye leaves behind his wife and two daughters, ages three and nine months.

When he arrived at the call, the suspect opened fire with a high-powered rifle, striking Bruce in the neck and upper shoulder area above his vest. Bruce was with the Green Lake County Sheriff's Office for 14 years leaves survived by his wife, three daughters, parents, and three siblings.

Robert accidentally shot and killed himself when he was putting his shotgun in his patrol car. The shotgun is usually in a vertical position between the two front seats. Investigation shows the trigger may have been depressed when he tried to positioned the shotgun in the lock. The accident happened in the parking lot of the CHP's Weaverville station. He was found three hours later in his vehicle. He was with the department for 14 years. He leaves behind his his wife, son, and daughter.


Deputy Sheriff William Davis

William was killed when a vehicle truck him while working at an accident scene. He was putting a driver under arrest for refusing to sign a citation when another driver lost control of her car on the icy road. The car slid into the back of his patrol car and struck him as he searched the suspect. William was thrown appx. 30-feet and died almost instantly. He had been in law enforcement for 21 years and leaves behind his wife, mother and brother.


Correctional Officer Frederick Hyatt

Frederick was strangled and beaten to death during an escape attempt by five inmates at the Middle Tennessee Correctional Complex. When other officers responded to the the common area they located Officer Hyatt's body. He had been strangled with a cord from a laundry bag and beaten with his flashlight and a sock filled with canned food. None of the five inmates were able to escape. Frederick served with the Tennessee Department of Correction for 11 years.


Deputy Sheriff Richard Meyer

Richard was killed when his patrol car hit construction equipment in the road. He was responding to back up another deputy for a burglar alarm, when he entered a construction zone. He tried to avoid a large gravel pile, but collided with a large piece of construction equipment. He is the first line of duty death for the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office. Richard served with the Sheriff's Office for three years and leaves behind his wife and one-year-old son.


Corporal Anthony Michael (Tony) Walker

Tony died of injuries from 10 days earlier when he was involved in an car accident. He was on patrol in his unmarked car when it went out of control and struck a tree. Tony served as the president of the Prince George's County Fraternal Order of Police. He had served with the department for 19 years and leaves behind his wife, son, and three daughters.

Matthew was shot and killed while backing up another officer during a traffic stop. The driver failed to produce a driver's license or vehicle registration. Both persons in the vehicle exited the car, each with two handguns, and opened fire on the officers. The suspects fired over 30 rounds from the handguns, striking both officers. Both officers were able to return fire killing one of the suspects. The second suspect remains at large. Matthew only served with the agency for 10 months and had previously served as a United States Air Force Security Police officer for four years.

Dean was killed while attempting to pass a slow-moving truck. He was behind the truck and turned on his emergency lights. As he was attempting to pass the truck on the right hand shoulder, his patrol motorcycle hit the truck near the right wheel well and was thrown. Dean did not make radio contact prior to the accident, it's not known why he activated his emergency lights. Dean was with the California Highway Patrol for 24 years.

John was on patrol when he stopped a car in which the driver had recently been released from prison on parole. The suspect fled in the car, John got back on his motorcycle and pursued him. In an attempt to cut off the suspect, the suspect intentionally rammed John's motorcycle with his van, he died from his injuries. Although the suspect fled on foot, but was apprehended by two civilians who witnesses the incident. It was later found out that his driver's license was later determined to have been revoked. John served with the Clifton Police Department for 15 years and is the first Clifton Police Officer ever to be killed in the line of duty since 1920.

His motorcycle struck the back of a vehicle that was stopped in the left lane attempting to make a left-hand turn. He was with the Temple Police Dept. for seven years. His patrol car went out of control, crossed the roadway, and struck a tree. Jeffry was with the New York State Police for 6 years and was assigned to Troop F. He leaves behind his parents and sister.

John John was accidentally shot and killed by another deputy. They were at a suspected meth lab at a mobile home. One deputy went inside to search after a suspect granted him permission. Three deputies remained outside making sure he could exit. The deputy inside saw someone hiding in a closet, holding what appeared to be a weapon. He took cover, the closet door opened and two women in the home began screaming. John John, thinking the deputy was in trouble, entered the home armed with a shotgun. The other deputy already inside saw John John's silhouette, thought he was an armed suspect, fired one round, and struck John John just above his vest. Three suspects fled, but were caught. None were charged in connection with John John's death. John John was with the Department for 6 years and leaves behind his wife and three sons.

Glenn was killed when he was struck by a vehicle while assisting a stranded motorist. He was returning to his patrol car to get flares, when the driver of a minivan who was experiencing chest pains, swerved out of control and struck Glenn and his patrol car. Glenn was pinned between the minivan and his patrol car and died from his injuries. Glenn had served with the Department for two years, and had previously served as an investigator with the medical examiner's office.

Christopher was killed in an automobile accident. His Chevy Blazer patrol vehicle struck a patch of black ice, went out of control and rolled over. Christopher served with the Department for 6 months, and had been in law enforcement for a total of 3 years. He leaves behind his 2-month-old son and his girlfriend.

Tony died from injuries when his patrol car collided with a vehicle being pursued by other agencies. The pursuit was through three counties, Spalding County is where Tony joined in. It ended when the suspect's vehicle crashed into Tony's vehicle. The suspect was apprehended and Tony was flown to a hospital where he died from his injuries the following morning. Tony was with the Georgia State Patrol for 2.5 years, and was assigned to the Griffin Post. He leaves behind his wife and two daughters.


Town Marshal Richard Mark Clapp

Richard suffered a fatal heart attack after a violent struggle with a 17-year-old domestic violence suspect. Richard and his son, a county jail officer, attempted to arrest the suspect. He resisted and Richard and his son wrestled with the suspect for several minutes before backup officers arrived taking the suspect into custody. After the suspect was handcuffed, Richard suffered a heart attack. He died on the way to the hospital. The suspect faces juvenile charges including aggravated battery, battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest. Richard was with the New Richmond Town Marshal for 22 years and leaves behind his wife and son.

Donnie was shot and killed after he went to a location to see if Sergeant Wilson had been taken hostage when suspects called the sheriff’s office and told them that a deputy had been shot. Sergeant Wilson had gone to the home of a two men upset that the state was taking a small piece of their land through imminent domain to widen a highway. When Sergeant Wilson arrived to discuss a complaint by highway crews that they had been harassed by the homeowners, he was taken hostage by the suspects. When they arrived, the suspects opened fire, striking Donnie. The other Deputy was able to retreat to a safe location and call of back-up. Donnie died from the gunshot wound while en route to the hospital.

Daniel had gone to the home of a two men upset that the state was taking a small piece of their land through imminent domain to widen a highway. When he arrived to discuss a complaint by highway crews that they had been harassed by the homeowners, he was taken hostage by the suspects. After a fourteen hour stand off and two hours of not hearing from the suspects, officers entered the house. Daniel's body was found inside the house. He had been handcuffed by the suspects and shot. It was not known to the department until after the raid that Daniel had been killed by the suspects. The three suspects: a man, his wife and son, were apprehended. The two men are charged with two counts of murder and one count of criminal conspiracy. The female, who wasn't home during incident was arrested and charged with one count of accessory before the fact of murder and one count of criminal conspiracy.


Corporal Thomas Roberts

Thomas was shot while responding to a call of shots fired during a neighborhood dispute. As Thomas and his partner tried to talk with the resident doing the shooting he came out of a home shooting. Both Thomas and his partner were shot. He died at the scene. Thomas was a Corporal and with the Department for fourteen years. Thomas leaves behind his wife and two children.


Officer Bryan S. Verkler
Mishawaka, Indiana

Age 27
Bryan was shot while responding to a call of shots fired during a neighborhood dispute. As Bryan and his partner tried to talk with the resident doing the shooting he came out of a home shooting. Both Bryan and his partner were shot. Bryan was taken to the hospital and died during surgery. He was a Patrolman with the Department for two years. Bryan leaves behind his wife.


Border Patrol Agent James Epling

James drowned when he fell or was pushed into the Colorado River in California. He was involved in a foot pursuit of a Mexican national and three Chinese nationals who were spotted on the California side of the river. Agents lost track of James during the foot pursuit. His body was located 3 days later. James had served with the Customs and Border Protection for less than 1 year and was assigned to the Yuma Border Patrol Station. He leaves behind his expectant wife and three children.


Scott A. Patrick
Gary, Indiana

Age 27
Scott was shot and killed while trying to assist a motorist. The motorist had a stolen car and while attempting to approach him Scott was shot. Scott was a State Trooper for three years. He leaves behind his wife who is expecting the birth of their child.

Reserve Officer Russell Simpson
Bandon, Oregon

Russell drowned trying to rescue a teenage boy swept into the ocean when he was walking his dog at the beach. Russell responded to the scene as part of a rope-chain of people trying to reach the boy. He was pulled under by the current and into the ocean. The boy was rescued. Russell was with the Department for 4 years. He was a retired firefighter from the Los Angeles County, California, Fire Department. He leaves behind his wife, mother, and brother, who is also with the Bandon Police Department.


John Watson
Kenai, Alaska

Age 43
John was shot and killed after locating a vehicle with a suspect and a 21- year-old female. The suspect appeared intoxicated and the officer wanted to conduct a welfare check. In an attempting to arrest the aggressive suspect, a struggle broke out. The suspect got ahold of John's handgun. Firing two shots, one shot struck John in the back, the second shot stuck John in the back of the head, killing him. When back-up arrived, after a stand-off, the suspect surrendered. John was with the Department for 18 years. He leaves behind his wife and children.


Trooper Nikky Green
Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Oklahoma
December 26, 2003
Age 35
Nikky was shot and killed after he pulled over a suspicious vehicle. When dispatch lost radio contact with him another Deputy and Trooper went to investigate and found Nikky alongside a rural county road. The suspect remains at large. Nikky was with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol for six years and leaves behind his wife and four children.


Deputy Sheriff Jesus A. Garza Jr.
Bexar County, Texas
December 26, 2003
Age 33
Jesus was killed in a car accident while responding to a report of a vehicle accident. His patrol car left skidded across the road and crashing against several trees. He was wearing his seatbelt, was killed instantly. Jesus was with the Department for 11 years and leaves behind his wife and three young children.


Paul Pino
California Highway Patrol, California
December 30, 2003
Age 49
Paul was killed when his patrol car was pushed under a flatbed truck while he made a traffic stop. The driver of vehicle that struck his car told officers she was driving while drowsy and could have been traveling at about 90 miles an hour. Paul was with the California Highway Patrol for 23 years and leaves behind his wife and four daughters.


Arthur Olsen
Town of Dover, New Jersey
December 30, 2003
Arthur was killed when he was struck by a transit train investigating a report of a homeless man on the railroad tracks. He was with the Town of Dover Police Department for 19 years and leaves behind his wife and two children.
